Antigua and Barbuda aren’t just beautiful, they’re heartwarming.

From the moment I arrived, I was struck by how genuine and generous the people are. My driver, Kareem, didn’t just get me safely from place to place. He actually made me dinner and delivered it to my resort. Who does that? It’s rare to feel that kind of kindness when you travel, but in Antigua, it seems to be part of the island’s rhythm.
It’s also one of the safest islands in the Caribbean, which lets you explore freely and connect deeply with the people and culture. There’s a sense of welcome everywhere you go.
Here’s my countdown of the top 3 things to do in Antigua and Barbuda, each one personally experienced just last week and guaranteed to make you fall in love with this island paradise.

A Taste of Paradise: Take a Food Tour in Antigua
If you really want to understand a place, start with its food. Antigua’s culinary scene is a delicious blend of African, British, and Caribbean influences—each bite telling the story of its people and past.
I did exactly that, and let me tell you... once you’ve had a roti from Roti King, you’ll be hooked. The first day, I ordered a chicken and potato roti, soft and warm, filled with fragrant curry and wrapped in fresh flatbread. It was so good, I went back the very next day. That’s how you know it’s love.
Cutie’s Restaurant & Bar also stole my heart with its breezy terrace, perfectly cooked seafood, and friendly staff who make you feel like family. Try the Mussels & Cockles with Fungi in White Wine Sauce. And no, Fungi (pronounced "foon-jee") isn't a mushroom. It's a national dish made of cornmeal and orkra and is similar to polenta and absolutely delicious!

When you’re there, ask to meet Cutie herself. She’s the perfect host, warm, welcoming, and full of stories about the island. And while it may sound a little unusual, stop by the bathroom before you leave. The walls are covered in fun photos of her grandchildren, and I promise, they’ll make you smile.
The Food N' Lime Tour, owned and operated by Tiffany, is the best way to experience it all at once. (Be sure to tell her "Hello" from me when you go!) You’ll meet local chefs, sample Antiguan favorites like old fashioned rum punch and chicken patties (hand pies), and learn how each dish connects to the island’s history.
Pro Tip: Go hungry and curious. Each stop offers more than just food—it’s a chance to hear stories, laugh with locals, and fall a little more in love with the island.
2. Swim with the Gentle Giants at Stingray City
If there’s one experience that completely surprised me, it was Stingray City.
Imagine wading into waist-deep, crystal-clear water as gentle, friendly stingrays glide past your legs. They’re curious, playful, and surprisingly affectionate. Honestly? They reminded me of puppies... sweet and a little mischievous.
I’ll admit it. I squealed (loudly) the first time one brushed against me and may or may not have grabbed onto a man I didn’t know. We both laughed (eventually), and within minutes, I was completely in awe. These creatures are absolutely beautiful, and once you relax, the experience becomes pure joy.

Captain Trouble (Randy) is just one of the amazing local guides who make the experience even better. They’re patient, knowledgeable, and genuinely care about the stingrays’ well-being. You’ll learn how to safely feed and interact with them, and you’ll leave with a whole new respect for marine life.
This experience is great for travelers of almost any age, and because the water is calm and shallow,
it’s accessible even for non-swimmers as life vests are
available.
Pro Tip: Bring a waterproof camera. You’ll want to capture these gentle giants up close. And if you forget it or don't have one, they'll take one for you while you hold a stingray. Prices are very reasonable.
1. Dance the Night Away at Shirley Heights Lookout
And in the top position, welcome to Shirley Heights Lookout, the crown jewel of Antigua experiences.
Every Sunday night, this historic hilltop overlooking English Harbour transforms into one of the most fun celebrations you’ll ever attend. Locals and visitors gather to watch the sun dip below the horizon while steel drum bands start to play.

The view is breathtaking, but it’s the atmosphere that steals your heart. The scent of barbecue fills the air—think jerk chicken, ribs, and burgers—and the rhythm of the drums pulls everyone to their feet. There’s no pressure, no pretense... just laughter, dancing, and connection.
I had the pork ribs, and they were delicious! My meal also came with potato salad, which had green peas mixed in. It was a little unexpected but added just the right touch of sweetness to balance the smoky barbecue. It’s the kind of meal that somehow tastes even better with live steel drums and that golden Caribbean sunset all around you.
Standing there, surrounded by new friends, I remember thinking, This is what travel is supposed to feel like.
Pro Tips:
Arrive an hour before sunset to grab a great spot for photos. When the steel drums give way to live reggae bands after dark, you’ll already be in the perfect place—with a drink in hand and the Caribbean breeze in your hair.
Wear sturdy shoes. The area is “paved” with cobblestones and can be uneven, especially once the sun goes down.
Bring bug spray! You’ll thank yourself later when you’re still dancing long after dark.
As I think back on my week in Antigua, it’s the people and the moments in between that keep coming to mind.
It’s Kareem's generosity and friendship. It’s dancing with strangers at Shirley Heights while holding a rum punch. It’s the magic of a stingray eating from your hand. And a million more small moments.
That’s what Antigua and Barbuda do. They capture your heart quietly, with warmth, flavor, and joy. You arrive expecting a beach vacation, but you leave with stories, friendships, and a sense of connection that stays with you long after you’re home.

FAQs
What’s the best time to visit Antigua and Barbuda?
The best time to visit is between November and April, when the weather is warm, dry, and perfect for beach days and outdoor adventures.
Do I need to rent a car in Antigua?
We don’t recommend it. In Antigua, they drive on the opposite side of the road from the U.S., and many of the roads are narrow or not well maintained. Instead, hire a driver. It’s safer, more relaxing, and gives you the chance to meet amazing locals. If you’re really lucky, you’ll become friends… and they might even deliver dinner to your resort!
Is Antigua family-friendly?
Absolutely. From safe beaches to animal encounters like Stingray City, Antigua offers plenty for families. Just be sure to check age limits for certain tours or excursions.
How long should I stay in Antigua?
Plan on at least five to seven days to enjoy the island’s top highlights without feeling rushed.
Is Barbuda worth visiting too?
Yes! Barbuda, Antigua’s quieter sister island, is known for its pink sand beaches and untouched beauty. It’s perfect for a day trip or an overnight escape. You can reach Barbuda with a quick 20-minute plane ride, and while you’re there, treat yourself to a meal at Nobu Barbuda, a world-class restaurant set right on the beach. Fresh seafood, stunning views, and that signature Nobu touch make it an experience you’ll never forget.
