They picture lions resting in the grass, elephants crossing dirt roads, and open-air safari vehicles moving through the bush. Those experiences absolutely exist, and they're every bit as incredible as you've imagined.
What most people don't realize is that South Africa is so much more than safari.
It's one of the most diverse destinations I've ever visited. In a single trip, you can explore a world-class city, sip wine in stunning mountain valleys, stay at luxury resorts, learn about unique ecosystems found nowhere else on Earth, and encounter wildlife that feels almost impossible to believe.
Before my trip, I expected to be impressed by the animals.
What surprised me was everything else.

The Moment I Fell in Love With South Africa
The moment happened during my very first safari.
We spent the afternoon settling into Jabulani Safari Lodge before heading out on an evening game drive. Partway through the drive, we stopped for sundowners at a watering hole. A full bar had been set up overlooking the water, complete with drinks and canapés. I ordered the lodge's signature cocktail made with Jabulani Gin and settled into my chair to enjoy the view.
At first, we spotted wildlife in the distance. There were zebras grazing quietly and giraffes moving gracefully across the landscape.
Then I noticed a herd of elephants. They were walking toward us.
As they grew closer, something unexpected happened. I started crying. I remember looking at them and saying over and over again, "They're real."
It sounds silly now, but it was the only thing I could think to say.
I've seen elephants in zoos, documentaries, and photographs my entire life. Yet seeing a wild herd moving across the African landscape felt completely different. They were bigger, wilder, and more majestic than I had ever imagined.
Eventually, they passed on the far side of the watering hole, continuing their journey through the bush. At one point, they were only a few feet away.
That was the moment I fell in love with South Africa.
Not because I saw an elephant. Because I experienced something that reminded me how extraordinary the world can be.
The Safari I Never Expected
A few days later, South Africa surprised me again.
I was staying at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, a luxury property located within the Cape Floral Kingdom. This region is home to the fynbos biome, one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems in the world. Hundreds of plant species grow there and nowhere else on Earth.
Instead of heading out on a traditional game drive, we climbed into a safari vehicle for a botanical safari.
At first, I wasn't sure what to expect. After all, how exciting could a plant safari really be? As it turns out, very exciting.
Our guides introduced us to an incredible variety of flowers, shrubs, and native plants, explaining how they fit together within the ecosystem. Among them was the King Protea, South Africa's national flower. The landscapes were unlike anything I had ever seen before.
What struck me most was the passion of the guides. They spoke about the plants with the same enthusiasm safari guides often reserve for lions or leopards. Their knowledge transformed what could have been a simple nature tour into one of the most memorable experiences of the trip.
It reminded me that South Africa's magic isn't limited to the animals.

The Food and Wine That Blew Me Away
If the botanical safari challenged my expectations, the food and wine completely shattered them.
One of my favorite stays was at Lanzerac, a historic wine estate in South Africa's Cape Winelands. Surrounded by mountains and vineyards, the property felt like something you might expect to find in Napa Valley or Tuscany.
Lanzerac is known for helping pioneer Pinotage, South Africa's signature wine varietal. During our stay, we enjoyed a guided wine tasting led by a knowledgeable sommelier who walked us through the estate's wines and the story behind them.
The wine was excellent.
The meal was even better!
We shared a harvest-style dinner featuring both traditional South African dishes and modern interpretations of local cuisine. I tried biltong, pap, and several other regional specialties while learning more about the country's culinary traditions.
The entire evening felt elevated without being stuffy. The service was exceptional. The setting was beautiful. The food was unforgettable.
Before visiting South Africa, I expected incredible wildlife. I did not expect one of the best meals of my life.

Then it's back into the safari vehicle for another unforgettable wildlife encounter.
